Binh Thuan has 7 main river basins: Long Song river, Luy river, Phan Thiet river, Ca Ty river, Phan river, Dinh river and La Nga river. Total area of river basin is 9,800 sq. km with length of river, spring is 663 km. Province’s yearly surface water is approx. 5.4 billion cub. m of water, in which external flow supplies 1.25 billion cub. m, especially La Nga river occupies for 2.1 billion cub. m. Water source distribution is disproportionate upon space and time. Basin of La Nga river with excess of water often faces water flooding but areas in Tuy Phong, Bac Binh, coastal area (basin of Phan, Dinh rivers) seriously lacks water, some places like Tuy Phong, Bac Binh show signs of desertification.
- Underground water source is small, infected by salinity, alum; it is not possible to be used for production, but only small quantity for life activities and production in small areas in Phan Thiet and La Nga plain.
Hydropower is quite large, total potential waterpower is approx. 450,000 KW, mainly distributed in La Nga river. Especially for 4 La Nga hydroelectricity dams at installed capacity of 417,000 KW, expected exploitable power production is 1.8 billion KWh. The workability of hydropower in basins of Dinh river to Long Song river is small, mainly with small hydroelectric plants (15 plants) at installed capacity of 1,900KW.
